I don’t know about you, but as a kid I had some pretty fantastically stupid, impossible, ideas. I daydreamed of flying boxes of Tide laundry soap, and flying trains, and thought my childhood friends would be there forever to help me create all my impossible ideas.
And then, there is one idea that’s not impossible, that humans have been dreaming and daydreaming of for a long time. A flying car. I don’t know where I first got the idea – it may have come out of thin air, or it may have come from a wacky television show – but I thought I’d invent the flying car. Like the phonetic dictionary I later dreamed of, my parents didn’t tell my such a thing had already been created, or that other people with far greater means and better engineering skills had the same idea. That was nice of them to not ruin a kid’s dreams.
Society is incredibly slow at implementing all the good ideas we have, and often we fall back and pursue the bad ideas. We say we’ll create green energy, and then putter around and can’t seem to do it, and regulation hinders us. The same thing happens with social, equal rights, issues. Sometimes we create something perfectly good – such as the Tesla Roadster – and it’s so expensive that those of us who’d very much like one just keep puttering along in our aging, polluting, vehicles.
Long ago I realized I’d never be the one to develop the flying car, but a dream is a dream and the idea is hard to get rid of. Thankfully, I’m not the only one that dreams a mighty dream. The Terrafugia, a vehicle that flies (of is it a flying craft that drives?), is now available. Unfortunately, it runs on gas, but I’ll take one dream at a time if that’s what’s required.
